Acupuncture

Acupuncture is now a well established medical treatment in this country. Its recognition has come increasingly from the orthodox medical world as well as from the public at large. It is one of the oldest forms of healing known to mankind. Originating in Asia nearly five thousand years ago, it has been used to restore the balance of the five elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood thus healing many different diseases.

Moxabustion treatment also assists healing by influencing this energy in such a way that it may return to its natural flow and balance in a person. This allows body, mind and spirit to return to health. The influence is achieved by inserting very fine needles into specific  points on the body, (see acupuncture chart) or burning moxa cones. in this way the bodyis brought back into balance helping with problems such as pain or weight loss.

ROY WATKINS BSc Lic.Ac. is a graduate of the Acupuncture Academy Leamington Spa. At present he works with a group of complementary health practitioners, treating patients and carrying out research. He has accumulated extensive knowledge and experience  and Traditional Chinese medicine over the past thirty or more years.

The World Health Organisation recommends it is effective in treating over 45 acute and chronic diseases.

From my experience of having given over 30,000  treatments over the past thirty years that it is very effective in treating conditions including NECK AND BACK PAIN, PAIN IN GENERAL, MIGRAINE, HEADACHES, SCIATICA, ARTHRITIS, FROZEN SHOULDER, ASTHMA, CHEST AND BREATHING PROBLEMS, DIGESTIVE DISORDERS, M.E.,SMOKING, MENSTRUAL PROBLEMS, IRRITABLE BOWEL, TENNIS ELBOW, SPORTS INJURIES, SINUSITIS, CONSTIPATION, DIARRHOEA, BLADDER PROBLEMS, DEPRESSION, FATIGUE, ANXIETY, NERVOUS TENSION, CARDIOVASCULAR AND CIRCULATION PROBLEMS, SKIN PROBLEMS, and non specific conditions, where conventional medicine has not found a cause.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I COME FOR TREATMENT?

For your initial visit the practitioner allows enough time to gather information on:

1) Your symptom(s), the history and treatment to date

2) Your medical and family history;

3) The behaviour of your various systems, for example, how you sleep, whether your digestion is good; and

4) Your physical condition, for example, distribution of body heat or the condition of your skin.

Diagnosis and Treatment

After completing a full diagnosis, an individual assessment is made and treatment can include Electro-Acupuncture and Laser  treatment.

Massage, Advice on Diet and Nutrition, Stress Management, Relaxation and Breathing Exercises.

Generally you will come weekly to begin with and then, as you improve, less frequently. The speed of improvement varies more according to the person rather than the label of the complaint. Some people are much improved after the first visit whilst others require more extensive treatment.

DOES IT HURT?

The needles we use are much finer than those used for injections or withdrawing blood. In most cases only a slight prick is felt when the needle goes through the skin.

WHAT ARE OUR PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS?

The British Acupuncture Council requires members, before joining, to have achieved a comprehensive understanding of theory and to have demonstrated clinical competence. Members must also have passed examinations in Western medical sciences.

The Council also provides Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance for all its U.K. members. All members are bound by the Council's Code of Ethics which covers relations with patients, fellow practitioners and the general public. All members are bound by a Code of Practice which includes stringent standards of hygiene and sterilisation for equipment and needles. These standards were formulated with the guidance of the Department of Health's Public Laboratory Service and provide complete safety against all forms of infectious diseases.

WHAT ABOUT MY ACUPUNCTURIST ?

If you have been seeing your doctor, you can tell him or her that you are coming for treatment.

WHAT ABOUT NEEDLE STERILISATION?

All needles used are disposable and therefore there is non risk of contracting an infection.
